Mobile Phone Safety and Security

Security
In 50% of all street robberies a mobile phone is stolen and in 67% of those robberies a mobile phone is the only item taken. Some of the best ways to keep you and your mobile safe are:

  • Use a PIN code to lock your phone
  • Be aware if you are walking and texting at the same time - keep alert!
  • Security mark your phone with a postcode and house number. The best is underneath the battery near to the SIM card
  • Keep your phone out of sight and safe
  • Only give your number to your friends
  • Avoid using your phone in the street and try and keep it on silent or vibrate so you don't draw attention to yourself
  • If you need to call someone in a public place, be discrete but be somewhere where you can see what is happening around you

Protect your privacy
Your mobile can be a direct link between you and spammers, scammers, identity thieves, online predators and cyberbullies.

  • Only give your mobile number out to people you know and can trust
  • Never reply to text messages from people you don’t know
  • Make sure you know how to block others from calling your phone

International Mobile Equipment
Identity (IMEI
) numberAn IMEI number is the unique number for your mobile phone – even if you change the SIM card the IMEI number stays the same.

To get the number, dial *#06# into the phone - it will then be displayed. Write the number somewhere safe - your form tutor will also keep a copy of the number.

You can use the number to block stolen or lost mobile phones by ringing 08701 123 123. You will be asked a security question to block and then unblock the phone.

Health
Although there is, as yet, no conclusive evidence that having a mobile phone clamped to the side of your head for the best part of the day is dangerous, try and limit the time you spend using your phone – it’s a communication tool, not a bionic limb. Only use your phone when necessary.
  • Keep the calls short
  • Text rather than call
  • Carry the phone away from your body when it is on standby
  • Don't use your phone when the reception is weak, the radio-wave emissions are higher
