Employment RegulationsGetting a holiday job? Good - it is a valuable experience and excellent as a reference for a future employer but just check that you are within the law.
1. What do I need to do when I start work? You must have a work permit. You can obtain an application form from your local Education Office or ask your employer, who may already have one. There are sections of the application form, which need to be completed by yourself, your parent and your employer.
And remember….. Your employer has a responsibility to take care of your health, safety and welfare when you are at work but you can help ensure you stay safe by:

| If you are 13 or 14 you may work the following hours | |
| SCHOOL DAYS | Not more than 2 hours in one day during the following periods
Morning: 7 am to start of school or Evening: close of school to 7 pm. |
| SATURDAYS | Up to 5 hours between 7 am and 7 pm |
| SUNDAYS | Up to 2 hours between 7 am and 11am |
| SCHOOL HOLIDAYS | Up to a maximum of 25 hours a week. (5 hours a day, 7 am–7 pm on any day except Sunday, on Sunday 2 hrs, 7 am–11 am) |
| If you are 15 or 16 you may work the following hours | |
| SCHOOL DAYS | Not more than 2 hours in one day during the following periods Morning: 7 am to start of school or Evening: close of school to 7 pm. |
| SATURDAYS | Up to 8 hours between 7 am and 7 pm |
| SUNDAYS | Up to 2 hours between 7 am and 11 am |
| SCHOOL HOLIDAYS | Up to a maximum of 35 hours a week. (8 hours a day, 7 am–7 pm on any day except Sunday, on Sunday 2 hrs, 7 am-11 am). |
AT ALL AGES – You should have a one hour break if you work for more than 4 hours in one day and your employer should ensure you have an annual 2 week break if you work during school holidays.
