Employment Regulations

Getting a holiday job?

Good - it is a valuable experience and excellent as a reference for a future employer but just check that you are within the law.

1.
 What do I need to do when I start work?

You must have a work permit.

You can obtain an application form from your local Education Office or ask your employer, who may already have one.  There are sections of the application form, which need to be completed by yourself, your parent and your employer.

 

And remember….. Your employer has a responsibility to take care of your health, safety and welfare when you are at work but you can help ensure you stay safe by:

  • Checking that you are properly trained

  • Making sure you wear suitable protective clothes

  • Asking questions if you aren’t sure what to do

  • Speaking to your employer or parents if during work anyone makes you feel uncomfortable or anxious by what they say or do.

2.What type of work can I do?

 

At Age 13

You may only do jobs from the following list of light work

  • agricultural or horticultural work

  • delivering newspapers

  • work in a shop

  • work in a hairdresser’s

  • office work

  • wash cars (not in a commercial garage)

  • work in a café or restaurant

  • work in a riding stables

  • domestic work in hotels

 

From Age 14

You may do work from the above list and other light work for example milk deliveries, Providing it is not in the list of Prohibited employment shown below.

 


3. Prohibited Employment

 

While you are still at school you cannot

  • work in a cinema, theatre, dance hall, disco or night club

  • sell or deliver alcohol

  • work in a petrol station

  • work in a commercial kitchen

  • collect or sort refuse

  • do window cleaning or any job which involves you being more than 3 metres off the ground

  • do a job which might bring you into contact with harmful chemicals

  • call at people’s houses to collect money

  • be exposed to adult material which is considered unsuitable for children

  • work in telephone sales

  • work in a slaughter house, abattoir or butcher shop

  • work in a fairground or amusement arcade

  • do ‘personal care’ in a residential or nursing home.


4. What hours can I work?

 

You may only start part time work when you are 13 years old

 

If you are 13 or 14 you may work the following hours

SCHOOL DAYS

Not more than 2 hours in one day during the following periods

 

Morning: 7 am to start of school or Evening: close of school to 7 pm.

SATURDAYS Up to 5 hours between 7 am and 7 pm
SUNDAYS Up to 2 hours between 7 am and 11am
SCHOOL HOLIDAYS Up to a maximum of 25 hours a week. (5 hours a day, 7 am–7 pm on any day except Sunday, on Sunday 2 hrs, 7 am–11 am)

 

 

If you are 15 or 16 you may work the following hours
SCHOOL DAYS

Not more than 2 hours in one day during the following periods

Morning: 7 am to start of school or Evening: close of school to 7 pm.

SATURDAYS Up to 8 hours between 7 am and 7 pm
SUNDAYS Up to 2 hours between 7 am and 11 am
SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

Up to a maximum of 35 hours a week.

(8 hours a day, 7 am–7 pm on any day except Sunday, on Sunday 2 hrs, 7 am-11 am).

 

AT ALL AGES – You should have a one hour break if you work for more than 4 hours in one day and your employer should ensure you have an annual 2 week break if you work during school holidays.
